Bigotry and Nationalism

10/01/2014 by Basia Rose

It’s with sheer terror I watch the news this morning, hearing about what our (Australia’s) ultra-right wing government is planning now. When Australians decided to punish the previous government for having the “audacity” to have a female leader, did they ever think about how many things will be ruined under Tony Abbott’s conservative Catholic flag-waving government?

How have we stepped backwards so far we’re stomping all over gay people and women’s rights and talking about “Christian values” in public education? How dare we ever, EVER laugh at the Tea Party in America?!

Here are some quotes from those who have decided to overhaul our education system:

“Forgotten is that many parents would consider the sexual practices of GLBT people unnatural and that most parents would prefer their children to form a relationship with somebody of the opposite sex.”

“Since the mid- to late ’70s, much of the education debate has centred on the supposed disadvantage suffered by migrants, working-class kids and women. More recently, gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people have become the new victim group.”

“The history curriculum, in addition to uncritically promoting diversity and difference instead of what binds as a community and a nation, undervalues western civilisation and the significance of Judeo-Christian values to our institutions and way of life.”

Wait… bisexuals are a victim group? Since when? Is this guy assuming that because gays, lesbians, and transsexuals are often victimized, bisexuals get to go along for the ride? I’ve been bi damn near all of my life and I’ve NEVER felt like a victim; my race has made me feel more of a victim than my sexuality!

Makes me want to come to Australia and have a talk with this guy…

I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t even know what being bisexual meant! This is a very scary lot of bigoted men we have running our country at the moment. I’m very worried about the direction our country is taking – especially as they have only been in government a few months. There’s a lot of damage to be done in the coming years. 😦
